COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Half Marathon is packed with tunnels, swing bridges, mining relics AND trig views - this challenging course has it all!
This course offers both challenge and opportunities to bust out some speed- but take it easy off the start line, immediately after leaving Event Base you approach two swing-bridges: these are load-limited and WALKING ONLY: so a good chance to ease into your day while taking in your beautiful surroundings.
Your route takes in two amazing mining tunnels – don’t forget your headtorch for these! Once you’ve emerged from the second tunnel, you pass over a swing bridge beside the beautiful Ohinemuri River and you will start your ascent for the day. The climbing begins in earnest after your first drinks station as you head up and around Mt Karangahake – including a visit to the trig for some 360 degree views!
After your descent from the trig, enjoy all the downhill you’ve earnt around the back of the mountain to loop back to the aid station for another refuel opportunity.
You’ve then got a gloriously technical downhill on the famous Dubbo 96 Track before you speed home on the riverside trails towards the finish line.
Road/Trail used: Crown Track, Crown Tramway Track, Waitewheta Pipeline Track, Scotsmans Gully Track, Number 7 Level Track, Karangahake Mountain Track & Dubbo 96 Track
