COURSE DESCRIPTION: A good honest trail marathon that isn’t for the faint hearted, but rewards those who are brave enough!
Starting south of the event base to begin with, you head out for a 21km loop that only the Marathon Course get to enjoy, before you pass back through event base to join the other courses for the second half of your day.
Following the Waitawheta River on technical single trail, you cross the river twice as you head through beautiful native bush heading towards Franklin Road where you’ll find your first aid station and some stunning riverside views!
A very brief section through private property from here, and you head back into the bush to pass Dalys Clearing Hut on your way back to complete this first loop. Your second aid station in the event base offers a great opportunity for your supporters to check in before you head towards the Karangahake Gorge.
For your second half expect stunning swing-bridges, tunnels and mining relics as you continue to follow the Waitawheta River. As you reach the furthest point of this section, and pass over a swing bridge beside the beautiful Ohinemuri River you will start the ascent. The climbing begins in earnest after your next drinks station as you head up and around Mt Karangahake – including a visit to the trig for some 360 degree views!
After your descent from the trig, enjoy all the downhill you’ve earnt around the back of the mountain to loop back to the last aid station for another refuel opportunity.
You’ve then got a gloriously technical downhill on the famous Dubbo 96 Track before you speed home on the riverside trails towards the finish line.
Road/Trail used: Mangakino Pack Track, Deans Track, Bluff Stream Track, Dalys clearing track, Crown Track, Waitawheta Pipeline Track, Crown Tramway Track, Scotsman Gully Track, Number 7 Level Track, Karangahake Mountain Track, Dubbo 96 Track.
